Along with several new functionalities and improvements included in Open LMS 3.1, we are introducing Moodle’s new supported model that aims to provide flexibility and to improve the overall learning experience for students: Competency-based education model (CBE). Here are some of the CBE features included in Open LMS 3.1:
Competencies describe the level of expertise a student may have with certain skills concerning any topic. Competency-Based Education (CBE), also known as competency -based learning or skill-based learning means evaluation and grading systems where students show their competencies. This kind of learning allows users to configure how their courses and activities will contribute the skills and knowledge required by participants, relating them clearly and easily. This system is intended to change the ‘study time’ based education model into the skills and knowledge to be developed. Likewise, this system provides students with flexibility to take courses according to their level of expertise and knowledge.
Competencies in courses
A teacher may list such competencies to be taught during a course. This option allows adding or removing competencies from a course, and linking them to activities in that course. In addition, there is an exclusive interface allowing teachers to rate these competencies. This will help teachers learn which courses require better efforts or more investment to keep them due to their significant value regarding their competency contribution.
Competencies in activities
Competencies may also be linked to Activities. This means that you are able to ensure you have Activities and Resources for the development of each competency in the course, and supplement those missing. Likewise, it is possible to link more than one competency to the same activity to reuse the course contents to develop multiple skills for students.
Once the competency-based structure is configured, you will be able to create a learning plan template. This template defines a set of competencies you may assign to a user group. This is more effective than creating individual learning plans for various students, because you will only need to update this template and changes will apply to all of the students.
