Open LMS and Class Technology GoToMarket Partnership

One of the reasons that I love working in EdTech is that for many, it is a project of passion, not just a career.  So, you end up having friends and former colleagues reappear with new ideas and new companies.  So, about 18 months ago, Michael Chasen called me to tell me about his new product he was working on…taking the power of the Zoom SDK, mixing in teaching and learning components from Moodle, and building a next generation synchronous classroom, I was so excited.

The fact that I’m working with people that are as passionate about education as I am makes me even more excited to announce the Open LMS partnership with Class today.  In my career, I’ve had the pleasure of announcing many great partnerships, but the Open LMS and Class partnership really is different.

There are three reasons why this partnership is unique.  The first is the symbiotic nature of the partnership.  This isn’t just about marketing and sales, our products are literally running together in the cloud, with Open LMS delivering some of the key components that make Class such a great tool.  The second is the focus and specialization that this partnership provides.  Open LMS is the largest provider of Moodle in the world and has built up vast expertise in delivering these teaching and learning tools at scale.  Class, especially with their recent purchase of Blackboard Collaborate, is the foremost expert in delivering synchronous educational experiences.  The teams complement each other so well, it’s almost scary.  The third reason this is unique is that it is a case study in why open source is important for education.  The fact that Moodle is open source meant that the Class team could experiment with it in various ways, and that they could work with Open LMS to leverage the power of the Moodle platform.  That’s just not possible without the open source nature of Moodle and Open LMS.

So, what does this mean for our clients?  For our clients, it means that you’ve got another great option for synchronous learning, integrated directly into the Open LMS Platform.  It means that you’ve got a unified team supporting you, both from Class and Open LMS.  But don’t take our word for it, we’d like to show you what that looks like, or better yet, let you try it for yourself.  We think you’ll like what you see.
