How Do You Measure Competencies No One Can See? Universidad Militar Nueva Granada Found the Answer by Migrating From Moodle™ to Open LMS

In this video success story, discover how Universidad Militar Nueva Granada (UMNG)—a Colombian higher learning institution delivering distance, online, hybrid, and on-campus programs—is making the invisible visible. For UMNG, choosing a new distance learning platform wasn't just an IT decision; it was a critical strategic move.

UMNG’s Director of Digital Transformation, Karolina González, explains why the institution moved from a base Moodle™ environment to Open LMS, how a custom competency plugin is bringing hidden learning outcomes to light, and why the university’s on-campus programs now want in on the transformation.

Why a Basic LMS Wasn't Enough: UMNG’s Search for a Platform That Could Measure What Matters

“For Universidad Militar, looking for a new platform for distance education was something critical and very important. We needed custom branding, a space where we felt at home. We’ve achieved that with Neo, which is what we call our LMS platform, and we’ve achieved it at this point.

“Second, we needed plugins that would give us these levels of learning—the inclusion of techno-pedagogical processes, such as competency levels, learning outcomes, and ticketing systems based on a user experience of our own that genuinely feels relevant, and also our own support within the techno-pedagogical spaces that have been implemented.

“That really is what makes it so that if education and technology advance, our platform can support it too—not stay at a basic level, but at a level that gives us our own institutional customization.”

Choosing a Partner, Not Just a Provider: Trusting Open LMS From Day One

“The technology partnership, trusting Open LMS, happened from the very first moment we made a match with one of your representatives, who offered us differentiating elements. As I mentioned, there’s the matter of data analytics, which for us is enormously important to have involved: the whole question of experience, of outcomes, of competencies, and also being able to have that service of our own and that closeness to us.

“Those are huge differentiators and important in our adaptation to change.”

Transformation Without Starting Over: Building on What Already Worked

“It’s true that transforming or changing to a platform very different from what you have creates quite a large disruption, but we had a Moodle™-based platform, and right now we’re with Open LMS. This means that while we are transforming, we aren’t completely discarding what we've already learned from our processes with our students and teachers. It lets us innovate while still having, as a foundation, the learning process we’ve already gained in this space.

“So along those lines, it has been a genuinely successful process.”

Open LMS is the transversal backbone of this process. Without this platform as the foundation, we couldn’t amplify what this platform amplifies: distance, online, and hybrid education, without setting aside face-to-face teaching, because the platform genuinely adapts to each of these processes.

Making the Invisible Visible At Scale

“The most important thing we’ve achieved—more than optimizing, really incorporating—has been the competency system. Making those invisible elements of learning visible through the platform is the greatest gain, and the greatest support we have for students and for teachers.

“Open LMS is the transversal backbone of this process. Without this platform as the foundation, we couldn’t amplify what this platform amplifies: distance, online, and hybrid education, without setting aside face-to-face teaching, because the platform genuinely adapts to each of these processes.

“That's our case. Our online and hybrid education model is being brought into the face-to-face model through the plugin and the custom development we’ve done around competency levels. So much so that they now want to adopt it on the in-person side.”

From 70% to 100%: The Last Mile of Digital Adoption

“Right now, we’re in a process where this implementation is going to become visible. We’re on the verge of our big launch, and the impact is on the visual and user sides. As administrators, we have high expectations for how we’ll move into this space with our students this year, and we’ll be able to offer that assurance and service. Our testing has been genuinely successful.

“What our KPIs indicate right now is that we’re starting from processes running at 60 to 70% adoption of the content transformation model, with the aim of reaching 100% in some two or three semesters. Those are the levels and processes of full adaptation in terms of transforming the environment, adopting the model, and incorporating stable content within the platform.”

More Than a Vendor Relationship: The Partnership Behind This Success

“Beyond the technology, the work with the Open LMS team is fantastic. And you have a spectacular ally in Samoo by Pentec.

“Within this match that’s been made with the team, working together has been an experience in itself. It’s a team where we’ve been 100% at a distance—virtual work, remote work—but the fit and the work we’ve had with each of our teams has been a complete success. Despite differences in schedules, distances, and everything else, we’ve managed to make a match, and the process has been successful. Beyond being partners or allies, after this whole process of working together, we’ve even formed a friendship."

A single phrase to sum up the experience of working with Open LMS is closeness, and technology in the service of education.

The Next Chapter: Adaptive Content on the Horizon

“I imagine the future of education in adaptive content, and that’s what we’re aiming toward, with the role of Open throughout, the transversal backbone that will let us reach that space, together with other important allies like Pentec Sisman.”
